Beguiling Beagle

Snoopy is an ESTP. Believe it or not, he is even easier to type than some of the other “human” characters in the Peanuts franchise by Charles Schultz. This outgoing, yet cool dog has such a big personality that he’s become every bit of a cultural icon as Charlie Brown himself. In many ways, he’s the star of the show.

The ESTP personality type is known for being action oriented. ESTP’s are the first type (known or not) thought of in the “Bro Culture” so often portrayed in the media. Known as the negotiator, the ESTP is known for making things happen. They are high energy people who aren’t afraid to jump into the fray on a second’s notice. In school, they are the kids (more often boys) who are looking around trying to find something to do, or even trouble to get into. While they can be tough-minded and aren’t afraid of conflict, they are often warm hearted and open individuals who make friends easily and truly enjoy the company of others. They are the ultimate in-the-moment people.

Here’s the breakdown. The E means extraverted, S means sensing, T means thinking, and P means perceiving. An extraverted person gets psychological energy from being around other people. A sensor is a person who is more detail oriented as opposed to someone who who is more possibility and pattern focused. A thinker is a person who values logic over feelings. This doesn’t mean that they are unfeeling, but they make decisions based on facts. Finally, a perceiver is a person who prefers flexibility and openness over planning and structure.

Does this sound like Snoopy? Well, he definitely likes to be with others. He’s really more the neighborhood dog for the whole Peanuts gang. One can easily conjure up images of Snoopy dancing and playing joyfully with the group. He is action oriented and adventurous, wether he’s fighting the Red Baron or boxing with Lucy. Logic is more important to him than the feelings of others. While easier to see in the comic strip with thought balloons, this trait can be illustrated in the cartoons too. Take note how he handles Lucy in a confrontation, giving her a big wet kiss. It certainly wasn’t to make her feel better. He even took on the part of Peppermint Patty’s tough as nails ice skating coach. The images of him holding his dog bowl before Charlie Brown or trying to get into public institutions (no dogs allowed) show his negotiating skills. He’s certainly warm and open. After all, a beagle is a hunting dog, yet his best friend is a little yellow bird.

This may be an odd post, but let’s face it. Snoopy is is an odd beagle.
